The story is set in one of the famous London Squares near the British Museum, in the Edwardian era, roughly about 1910. The children,Victoria and Tamara, are two girls aged seven and nine, living with their widowed father and governess, in one of the houses that overlook the garden in Bedford Square, where they play nearly every day. They are introduced to Archibald Kipper, an orphan, who has come to live with his great uncle in one of the neighbouring houses. The girls are delighted to have a new friend, as there are not many children of their age living close by. They are all set for a happy untroubled relationship, when late one evening Victoria overhears her father and Archibald's great uncle's conversation and realises not only is Archibald not an orphan, but that he is also heir to a large fortune. A further dilemma is caused by a mysterious person in the Square following them.
After Archibald's kidnap the girls show great resourcefulness in coming to his rescue. The excitement of their hair-raising escape over the roofs of a house and church, is equalled by their subsequent breathtaking escape from what appears to be a sinister Turk. There are further excitements, but in order to see what happens you will have to READ THE BOOK!
